As hurricane season hits its peak, Florida’s top emergency manager is warning of the potential for major electrical problems after a storm hits.
“We’re in an area of which supply chain issues are becoming more and more of a problem,” Florida Division of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie said.

Some of Formula One's top bosses are in disagreement over the system used to license drivers. The debate comes as F1's governing body reportedly is looking into a granting an exemption to IndyCar driver Colton Herta. The American has been mentioned as a possible driver for AlphaTauri next season but does not have the Super License required to compete in F1. Some teams don't believe the International Automobile Federation should allow Herta, given the current rules. However, some team bosses are open to changing the system and giving IndyCar drivers more value. Three former F1 drivers are on the current IndyCar grid.

Another goal from Erling Haaland isn’t enough for Manchester City as Leon Bailey’s second-half equalizer salvages a 1-1 draw for Aston Villa against the defending champion in the English Premier League. Haaland took his tally to 10 goals from six games by volleying in a cross from Kevin de Bruyne in the 50th minute. But he misses two chances to score a second before Villa strikes back. Bailey met a low cross from Jacob Ramsey and hammers a first-time shot high into the net in the 74th to rescue a valuable point for Villa. Their manager Steven Gerrard has been under heavy pressure after three straight league losses.
MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies passed a bill late Friday that brings the national guard under control of the Defense Ministry in a move likely to be challenged in court.
Saturday’s game between Sam Houston and No. 6 Texas A&M has been suspended before the start of the third quarter because of lightning in the area. The suspension was announced at the end of halftime with the Aggies up 17-0. More and more moose from Idaho and Utah are making their way into Nevada, where they’re finding wilderness to their liking without the kind of help from humans most species get when they relocate. Irregular and sporadic moose sightings in Nevada date back to the 1950s, but about a decade ago, observations began to climb in the northeast corner of the state. By 2018, the Nevada Department of Wildlife estimated there were somewhere between 30 and 50 moose in the state. Now, their numbers total well above 100. Wildlife officials say it’s the first time a big game species has made a comeback in Nevada without a concentrated relocation effort.

California lawmakers adjourned this year’s legislative session at the onset of a protracted triple-digit heat wave. That fed some of their final debates over climate change and keeping the lights on by propping up an aging nuclear reactor. They left Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom in the hot seat, with 30 days to sign or reject hundreds of bills. He'll consider proposals on abortion, climate change, criminal justice, mental health and workers' rights, among many others from the legislative session that ended Thursday. But many of the bills are measures he either backed or sought himself from his fellow Democrats who control legislative supermajorities.

A judge has dismissed a federal lawsuit filed against the city of Portland, the mayor and the Multnomah County district attorney by the estate of a man who was shot and killed after a pro-Trump car rally in 2020. The suit had alleged that negligence around increasingly violent clashes between competing groups in Portland created an environment that encouraged lawlessness and led to Aaron “Jay” Danielson’s killing. The Oregonian/OregonLive reports U.S. Magistrate Judge Youlee Yim You found that the city and the mayor took no specific action that placed Danielson in greater danger that night. She dismissed the lawsuit’s due process and negligence claims.

Spurs held on to make it four wins and two draws from their opening six matches.
Bournemouth has come from two goals down at halftime against Nottingham Forest to win 3-2 in the English Premier League. Bournemouth lost 9-0 at Liverpool last weekend and manager Scott Parker was sacked on Tuesday. The team looked on course for another defeat under the temporary charge of Gary O’Neil. Forest led at the break through Cheikhou Kouyate’s header and Brennan Johnson’s penalty. But O’Neil’s men got back in it thanks to Philip Billing’s wonder strike from distance and drew level on Dominic Solanke’s acrobatic effort. The memorable comeback was completed three minutes from time when they capitalized on poor defending by Scott McKenna and Jaidon Anthony converted the winner.
Daniel Podence has notched the only goal as Wolves beat Southampton at Molineux for their first English Premier League victory. The little Portugal winger scuffed his finish in first-half stoppage time but it was enough to lift Bruno Lage’s side out of the bottom three in the standings. Southampton had a second-half effort by Che Adams ruled out for handball and the striker hit the crossbar with another header. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side was unable to follow up their midweek home win against Chelsea and slipped to a third league defeat.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis wants a federal judge to throw out a free speech lawsuit filed by a Democratic prosecutor he suspended from office over statements about not pursuing criminal charges in abortion, transgender rights and certain low-level cases. The Republican governor told U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle of Tallahassee in a filing late Friday that Andrew Warren _ removed last month as elected state attorney in Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa _ cannot claim First Amendment protection for his comments on how he would handle these hot-button political issues. A hearing is set Sept. 10 on Warren's lawsuit.
